Beautiful Engraving made by Pieter Philippe, Dutch, 1663(c.), presents the portrait of Gideon Harvey, half-length, turned to right and seated at a table, holding a skull; frontispiece to the sitter's "New Principles of Philosophy" (Archelogia philosophica nova, or, New principles of philosophy containing philosophy in general, metaphysicks or ontology, dynamilogy or a discourse of power, religio philosophi or natural theology, physicks or natural philosophy / by Gideon Harvey ... London: Printed by J. H. for Samuel Thomson ..., 1663). In this book the word ontologia first time has been used in English.
► Gideon Harvey (c 1640-c 1700) was physician to Charles II (1630-1685), and in 1683, as a senior member of the Royal College of Physicians, classified the physicians of the College into six groups (see in Chapter II. Of the several Sects of modern Physicians of his book The art of curing diseases – available on-line on Google-books). These comprised the chalybeates, medical ass-drivers, jesuitical doctors, medical water-bailiffs, butcher doctors and muck doctor. Each type, Harvey maintained, cured disease by different means.
Inscription Content: Lettered in lower margin, two lines: "Gedeon Haruæus utriusque med. et Phil. Doctor apud Londinenses / practicus et colleg. med. Hagiens. quondam Socius." and "Hagæ Comitis Anno 1663" and "Pierre Philippe sculp.".
